Meet Reef Check Malaysia’s Board of Trustees

Ruth Yeoh, Director of Investments, YTL Group 

Ruth-YeohRuth currently leads the environmental division at YTL, where she reports on her organisation's environmental activities through writing its award-winning Sustainability Reports. Ruth also pioneered YTL's highly successful "Climate Change Week", an educational campaign designed to raise awareness on the important issue of climate change in Malaysia and globally. She is a member of the Institute of Corporate Responsibility Malaysia (ICRM) and is an investment committee member of both the Asian Renewable Energy and Environment Fund (AREEF) and Renewable Energy and Environment Fund (REEF), investing in clean technology and renewable energy. Ruth was appointed as the youngest Board Member of Rare Conservation in 2008, with responsibilities in the Governance Committee of this US-based conservation organisation.

Ruth graduated with a degree in Architectural Studies (Hons) from the University of Nottingham UK and an MSc in Management from Cass Business School in London. In 2007, she authored and co-edited a book on climate change entitled, "Cut Carbon, Grow Profits: Business Strategies for Managing Climate Change and Sustainability" (published in early 2007). She was appointed as a Trustee of Reef Check Malaysia in 2009.

Ning Baizura, Singer and Entertainer

ning-baizuraPopularly known as Ning, she first entered the commercial scene in 1992 and has since become a recording artiste under various international labels. Her love for the ocean started with the hobby enjoyed by her husband, Omar Sharif Christopher Layton Dalton – SCUBA diving. While learning to SCUBA dive in 2007, she was amazed at the beauty of the underwater environment and realised that the marine ecosystem is threatened by human activities. She has since become involved in activities that support the cause to protect Malaysia's marine resources, including volunteering herself to be a spokesperson for Reef Check Malaysia. She became a Trustee of RCM in 2009.

Gordon Reid, Consultant

Gordon-ReidGordon was formerly the Director of UK Trade and Investment at the British High Commission, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. After working in Malaysia from 2004, he opted for early retirement and remained in Malaysia under the "Malaysia My Second Home" programme. An avid diver, he became a Trustee of Reef Check Malaysia in 2009 after completing the EcoDiver training course, with the goal of helping RCM expand its conservation activities.

Ralph Dixon, Director of Environmental Investments, YTL Corporation Berhad  

ralph-dixonRalph has been with YTL for seven years, heading up their carbon consulting subsidiary and managing the environmental investment division and sustainability division for the Group. Previously, Ralph worked in investment banking for 15 years with Hoare Govett, Hong Leong and Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein. Following that, Ralph moved into manufacturing in operational roles in 2001 as the Chief Executive Officer of the paper converting factories in Indonesia and South Africa for Detpak, and then Hong Leong Asia in Singapore as Chief Executive Officer for their recycled wood packaging subsidiary, GPac Technology.

Ralph graduated from the University of Warwick, United Kingdom, with a B.Sc. in Management Sciences. He also has a Diploma in Mandarin from the National Taiwan Normal University. He was appointed as a Trustee of Reef Check Malaysia in 2012. 

Kevin Hiew, Consultant  

kevin-hiewKevin was formerly Head of the Marine Parks Division of the Department of Fisheries, Malaysia. During his tenure with the Department of Fisheries, he served in several capacities, including as State Director of Fisheries in the states of Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, and Selangor. Upon his retirement from the Department of Fisheries, Kevin joined WWF-Malaysia as their National Programme Director and eventually left as Senior Advisor of their Coral Triangle Programme. 

He currently consults independently for various organisations and projects. His consultancy experience include: the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) for marine habitats on Malaysia’s National Ocean Policy; WWF-Malaysia on marine biodiversity guidelines and Malaysia’s Coral Triangle Initiative matters; the Department of Marine Parks Malaysia/UNDP/GEF project in marine park management, including elements of enforcement. He was also the Team Lead to the consultancy team for WWF’s Proposed Regional Forum on Live Reef Food Fish Trade (LRFFT). 

Kevin became a Trustee of Reef Check Malaysia in 2013. 

Lim Jit Cheng, Executive Director (Advisory), KPMG

lim-jit-chengJit began his career with KPMG Singapore and is currently the Executive Director with Advisory at KPMG Malaysia. He was extensively involved in Special Administration engagements for companies acquired by the Malaysia National Asset Management Company (Danaharta), and was involved in formulating and implementing Workout Proposals for these financially distressed companies. He also successfully managed and restructured pharmaceutical and stock-broking concerns. 

In addition to his professional leadership, Jit was a member of the KPMG Global Green Expedition to Kenya in 2010 and was attached to the Mwamba Field Study Centre where he assisted with local efforts on conservation of threatened habitats and species in Malindi-Watamu coastal area.   

Jit currently heads various corporate social responsibility projects for KPMG Malaysia, especially its EcoDiver and Rainforest to Reef (“R2R”) programmes conducted by Reef Check Malaysia. He is a certified EcoDiver and believes in playing an active role in protecting Malaysia’s unique natural heritage, including becoming a RCM Trustee in 2013.
