International Year of the Reef (IYOR) 2018
Hello again everyone! As you now know, it is the Third International Year of the Reef (IYOR 2018). Reef Check Malaysia’s goals align closely with those of IYOR and we have many exciting plans for this year. We do hope you will be able to join and support us as we spread awareness of the importance of coral reefs and take action to help protect our reefs.
IYOR 2018 aims to strengthen global awareness of coral reefs and associated ecosystems, promote partnerships and share information between stakeholders for the sustainable management of coral reefs, as well as identify and implement effective management strategies for conservation and sustainable use of these ecosystems. This is in line with RCM’s current efforts in Malaysia, which focus on helping stakeholders to implement sustainable coral reef management. IYOR 2018 provides an opportunity to extend efforts to raise awareness among Malaysians about the value and importance of coral reefs, the threats they face and what we can all do to contribute to reef conservation.
1. Action of the Month
For every month in 2018, we will suggest an action you can take to help save our reefs. Support us in these actions and play your part in helping to protect coral reefs! For every action that you do, don’t forget to snap a photo and upload it on your Facebook or Instagram account and use the hashtags given. Let’s work together to save our reefs!
In February, RCM launched our very own Instagram page! You can follow us at @reefcheckmalaysia, and for the latest news about what we do, you can check out our Facebook pages: “Reef Check Malaysia”, “Cintai Tioman” and “Cintai Mantanani”.
March: Join a beach clean-up
Share some photos of you during the beach cleanup and tag us on Facebook (Reef Check Malaysia) or Instagram (@reefcheckmalaysia). Also, don’t forget to use the hash tags #IYOR2018Malaysia #reefcheckmalaysia
Locations of the beach clean-ups:
We have decided to focus on marine debris this year, as we are seeing alarming amounts of plastic and other trash on beaches around Malaysia. This affects tourism – a major industry in Malaysia, as well as impacting marine mammals and food security. The problem is not local, and will need concerted efforts from all parties to come up with sustainable solutions. We are talking to drinks companies, packaging manufacturers, resorts and dive operators – but ultimately solving the problem will need government participation.
After this clean-up in March, we will follow up with media coverage and lobbying to relevant government agencies, using the data and the combined voices of all participants – including our corporate friends from Coca Cola and F&N. Further clean-ups are planned, including one in September in conjunction with the International Coastal Clean-up (ICC) Day. We hope that these efforts will help to not only raise awareness on this issue but also kick start a series of actions by all relevant stakeholders to address the problem of plastic waste and marine debris in Malaysia.
2. Photo contest
Don’t forget! We will be organizing a photo contest sometime towards the end of 2018. Any photos related to IYOR2018 and coral reefs will be accepted. So start snapping away and keep an eye out for more details!
