International Year of the Reef (IYOR) 2018

Hello again everyone! Time really does fly very fast, and we are now into the 5th month of the Third International Year of the Reef (IYOR 2018). Reef Check Malaysia’s goals align closely with those of IYOR and we have many exciting plans for the rest of the year. We do hope you will be able to join and support us as we spread awareness of the importance of coral reefs and take action to help protect our reefs. We have already suggested a few things you can do to join us and we hope you have been keeping up with these actions.

In February, RCM launched our very own Instagram page! You can follow us at @reefcheckmalaysia, and for the latest news about what we do, you can check out our Facebook pages: “Reef Check Malaysia”, “Cintai Tioman” and “Cintai Mantanani”.

In March, we organised a beach clean-up in several locations across Malaysia, with the help of our partners. The results of the clean-up proved one thing, marine debris is a serious issue, especially plastic waste, which was the highest amount of trash found in almost every location.

In April, we encouraged everyone to stop using plastic straws and turn to a better option, stainless steel straws. We do hope some of you have decided to go the eco-friendly way and opt for no straws or stainless steel straws.

1. Action of the Month

For every month in 2018, we will suggest an action you can take to help save our reefs. Support us in these actions and play your part in helping to protect coral reefs! For every action that you do, don’t forget to snap a photo and upload it on your Facebook or Instagram account and use the hash tags given. Let’s work together to save our reefs!

May: Bring Your Own Bag (BYOB)!

Plastic bags have caused great damage to the marine environment and marine life. We have all heard countless cases of how marine life such as whales and turtles die from ingesting too many plastic bags. We also see plastic bags littering beaches, which is an eyesore. In our recent beach clean-up in March, we collected a total of around 6,200 plastic bags from all our clean-up locations across Malaysia!

Let’s all work together to help address and eventually solve this problem. Enough of plastic bags! Why not bring our own reusable bags when we run out for groceries or to buy whatever we need. Invest in some good long-lasting bags and just keep reusing them! There are so many options of reusable bags these days, they come in different designs and sizes. Keep one in your car or your handbag/ backpack so you will be able to use them whenever you need. Encourage your family and friends to do the same too – let us all play our part to save the environment!

Share some photos of your newly adopted action to help save our coral reefs and tag us on Facebook (Reef Check Malaysia) or Instagram (@reefcheckmalaysia), and use the hash tag #saynotoplasticbags. Also, don’t forget to use the usual hash tags #IYOR2018 #IYOR2018Malaysia #reefcheckmalaysia

2. Photo contest

Don’t forget! We will be organizing a photo contest sometime towards the end of 2018. Any photos related to IYOR2018 and coral reefs will be accepted. So start snapping away and keep an eye out for more details!

3. Beach clean-up in September 2018

We will be organising a beach clean-up on the 22nd of September 2018 in conjunction with the International Coastal Clean-up (ICC) Day. Locations will be announced as we get closer to the date, so if you happen to be interested to volunteer in any of the locations, do stay tuned for more details.
