RCM believes that the most effective approach to coral reef conservation is to improve management, reducing local impacts to reefs. These include impacts such as waste management, sewage treatment, sedimentation from land development and physical impacts from divers and snorkelers. However, given the amount of damage caused by local threats (such as destructive fishing), as well as the emergence of broader scale impacts (including mass coral bleaching and ocean acidification), we believe there is a need to look at other approaches to coral reef conservation.
